Albir / 12 June 2026
L'ALFÀS DEL PI, SPAIN – Racó de l'Albir Beach has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and preserving the natural environment through its continued participation in the Valencian Community's Smoke-Free Beaches Network. The initiative strengthens measures that prohibit smoking and vaping throughout the bathing area, helping to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable coastal environment for residents and visitors alike.
The smoke-free designation forms part of a wider regional strategy aimed at reducing exposure to second-hand smoke, preventing environmental pollution and promoting healthier lifestyles in public spaces. By maintaining its smoke-free status, Racó de l'Albir Beach continues to position itself as a leading example of responsible coastal management within the Marina Baixa region.
A smoke-free beach provides significant benefits for both people and the environment. Cigarette butts remain one of the most commonly discarded forms of litter worldwide and can take years to decompose. Many contain toxic substances that can leach into marine ecosystems, posing risks to wildlife and contributing to coastal pollution.
Mayor Vicente Arques reaffirmed the municipal government's commitment to sustainable public policies and environmental stewardship during a presentation attended by local officials and public health representatives. The event brought together municipal technicians, Health Councillor Marisa Cortés, Tourism and Beaches Councillor Luis Morant, Marina Baixa Director General of Public Health José Vicente Pascual, and Marcos Espina from the Health Promotion Department of the Benidorm Public Health Centre.
Speaking at the event, Marisa Cortés highlighted the importance of creating healthier public environments and encouraging positive lifestyle choices among residents and visitors.
"Smoke-free public spaces help protect everyone, particularly children and vulnerable groups, while promoting a culture of wellbeing and respect for shared environments," she said.
Protecting Health and the Coastal Environment
The smoke-free beach initiative delivers a range of public health and environmental benefits, including:
Enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Reinforcing the area's reputation as a sustainable tourism destination.
Tourism and Beaches Councillor Luis Morant noted the strong level of public compliance with the regulations and praised beach users for their cooperation.
"The vast majority of beachgoers respect the rules and understand the importance of preserving this exceptional natural environment," he said. "Maintaining a smoke-free beach contributes directly to the quality and sustainability of our tourism offering."
While enforcement measures remain in place, officials report that infringements are relatively rare. Visitors are reminded that penalties for smoking or vaping in designated smoke-free beach areas can reach approximately €300.
Growing Momentum Across Spain
Smoke-free beaches have become increasingly common across Spain as municipalities seek to address both public health concerns and environmental challenges. Regional governments and local authorities have recognised that reducing tobacco consumption in public spaces can significantly improve air quality, reduce waste and encourage healthier lifestyles.
The Valencian Community has emerged as one of the leading regions promoting smoke-free coastal environments, with a growing number of beaches joining the network each year. The programme supports broader sustainability goals and aligns with international efforts to reduce marine pollution and protect coastal ecosystems.
A Collective Responsibility
José Vicente Pascual, Director General of Public Health for Marina Baixa, emphasised the collective benefits of the initiative and the importance of shared responsibility.
"This programme reflects respect for oneself, respect for others and respect for the environment. The benefits extend to the entire community and help create healthier and more enjoyable public spaces."
Officials stressed that protecting beaches requires collaboration between local authorities, residents and visitors. Continued public support is considered essential to maintaining the success of smoke-free coastal initiatives and ensuring that future generations can enjoy clean and healthy beaches.
Strengthening Sustainable Tourism
Racó de l'Albir Beach is one of the Costa Blanca's most popular coastal destinations and forms part of the Serra Gelada Natural Park area. The beach's smoke-free status complements broader sustainability initiatives already implemented in the municipality, including environmental education programmes, coastal conservation measures and responsible tourism policies.
By reinforcing its commitment to a smoke-free environment, L'Alfàs del Pi continues to strengthen its position as a forward-thinking Mediterranean destination where health, sustainability and environmental protection remain key priorities.
