National Recognition For Costa Blanca Landmark
One of the Costa Blanca's most iconic natural attractions has officially been recognised as the Best Blue Trail in Spain 2026, with local residents, visitors and officials gathering to celebrate the prestigious national award.
The Camino al Faro del Albir (Albir Lighthouse Trail), located within the spectacular Serra Gelada Natural Park, received the distinction from the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), the organisation responsible for managing Spain's internationally recognised Blue Flag programme.
The award places the Albir Lighthouse Trail at the top of more than 200 entries submitted by municipalities across Spain, highlighting its outstanding environmental management, accessibility, educational value and commitment to sustainability.
Celebration Held At The Trail
L'Alfàs del Pi Town Hall organised a special day of activities on Sunday to mark the achievement.
Attending the event were:
• Mayor Vicente Arques
• Tourism, Beaches and Environment Councillor Luis Miguel Morant
• ADEAC President José Palacios
• Local residents and visitors
• Representatives of Serra Gelada Natural Park
A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the entrance to the trail, allowing visitors to recognise the route's national status as Spain's leading Blue Trail for 2026.
Why The Trail Won
According to ADEAC, the Albir Lighthouse Trail achieved the highest overall score in a nationwide assessment involving:
• More than 200 candidate trails
• 149 municipalities
• 24 Spanish provinces
• 12 autonomous communities
The route was evaluated by a multidisciplinary panel of 28 experts specialising in:
• Environmental conservation
• Sustainable tourism
• Education
• Public health
• Accessibility
• Safety and heritage management
Judges praised the trail for its accessibility improvements, biodiversity protection initiatives, environmental education programmes and ongoing conservation work.
Environmental Excellence Recognised
The jury highlighted several projects that contributed to the trail's success, including:
• Improved accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility
• Selective vegetation management to encourage biodiversity
• Removal of dead biomass to reduce environmental risks
• Protection and promotion of native plant species
• Enhanced information panels and visitor signage
• Guided educational tours and interpretation programmes
• Community volunteer and environmental awareness projects
Speaking during the ceremony, ADEAC President José Palacios described the route as "an example" of how environmental protection, tourism and accessibility can successfully work together.
Serra Gelada Team Honoured
The celebrations also included recognition for the Serra Gelada Natural Park Brigade, whose staff carry out year-round maintenance, conservation and improvement projects throughout the protected landscape.
Officials praised the team's efforts in preserving one of the Valencian Community's most important coastal ecosystems.
A Trail With International Appeal
Stretching approximately 2.5 kilometres, the Albir Lighthouse Trail connects Racó de l'Albir beach with the historic Albir Lighthouse, offering panoramic views across the Mediterranean coastline.
The route passes through Serra Gelada Natural Park, which holds special significance as the Valencian Community's first marine-terrestrial natural park.
Its combination of dramatic cliffs, protected wildlife habitats and accessible infrastructure has made it one of the region's most popular outdoor attractions.
Visitor Numbers Continue To Rise
The trail's popularity continues to grow year after year.
Key figures include:
• More than 314,000 visitors during 2025
• One of the most visited nature trails in the Valencian Community
• Fully accessible route suitable for visitors of all abilities
• Major attraction for both residents and international tourists
The route has formed part of Spain's Blue Trails Network since 2013 and has become a benchmark for sustainable tourism development.
Environmental Awards Success
Mayor Vicente Arques used the occasion to highlight L'Alfàs del Pi's growing environmental credentials.
The municipality now holds eight environmental distinctions:
• 1 Blue Flag beach (Racó de l'Albir)
• 1 Blue Trail award (Albir Lighthouse Trail)
• 6 Blue Centres dedicated to environmental education
Local officials noted that this gives L'Alfàs del Pi one of the strongest environmental accreditation records among tourist destinations in Spain.
Looking Ahead
Tourism officials believe the latest recognition will further strengthen the municipality's reputation as a leading sustainable tourism destination on the Costa Blanca.
As visitor demand for nature-based and environmentally responsible tourism continues to increase across Europe, the Albir Lighthouse Trail's combination of accessibility, conservation and educational value is expected to attract even more visitors in the years ahead.
The award not only recognises the trail's natural beauty but also the long-term commitment of local authorities, environmental teams and community groups working to preserve one of Alicante Province's most treasured landscapes.
