Andalucía / 10 July 2026
A series of devastating wildfires sweeping southern Spain has claimed at least 11 lives, with four British nationals feared to be among the dead, as firefighters continue battling blazes across Andalucía during an intense summer heatwave.
The tragedy follows fast-moving fires that broke out in Los Gallardos and Bédar (Almería) and Estepona-Benahavís (Málaga), forcing the evacuation of around 1,000 residents and holidaymakers, closing major roads and triggering one of Andalucía's largest emergency responses in recent years.
Four Britons believed among those killed
Spanish emergency officials have confirmed that many of those who died were foreign nationals.
According to Andalucía's regional emergency chief, Antonio Sanz, investigators believe four of the victims may have been British, after a vehicle discovered during search operations was found to have a right-hand drive steering wheel. Formal identification is still underway, and British consular officials are expected to assist once nationalities are officially confirmed.
Most of the victims were attempting to flee the rapidly advancing flames. Four people died inside a vehicle, while several others abandoned their cars before becoming trapped by the fire in difficult terrain. Authorities believe some motorists diverted from official evacuation routes, with emergency officials warning that the alternative escape path became a deadly trap.
Wildfire spread with terrifying speed
The worst of the fires erupted near Los Gallardos, in Almería province, where investigators believe a fallen electricity cable may have ignited dry vegetation during exceptionally hot and windy conditions. The blaze spread rapidly through woodland towards nearby communities, prompting the evacuation of Bédar and surrounding hamlets.
At the same time, another significant wildfire broke out between Estepona and Benahavís on the Costa del Sol.
More than 100 people were evacuated from residential developments, including the Four Seasons apartments and Parque Botánico Country Club, while the AP-7 motorway was temporarily closed as flames and thick smoke threatened the carriageway.
Massive emergency operation
More than 150 firefighters, supported by military emergency units, aircraft, helicopters, specialist vehicles and medical teams, remain on the ground as authorities continue efforts to contain the fires. Search operations are also continuing in affected areas amid concerns more victims could yet be discovered.
Several people have suffered serious burns and remain in hospital.
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims' families and confirmed that additional emergency resources had been deployed to assist Andalucía's regional authorities.
Extreme heat fuels growing wildfire danger
The fires come during an intense period of extreme temperatures affecting much of southern Europe, with large parts of Spain experiencing prolonged heat and tinder-dry vegetation.
Emergency services have repeatedly warned residents and tourists not to approach active wildfire zones and to follow evacuation instructions immediately.
Officials say the combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds has created some of the most dangerous wildfire conditions seen in recent years.
Advice for British visitors
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) routinely advises British travellers in Spain to monitor local emergency alerts during periods of wildfire risk and to follow the instructions of Spanish authorities if evacuation orders are issued.
Holidaymakers travelling across Andalucía, particularly in the Costa del Sol and Almería regions, are urged to check road conditions before travelling and avoid affected areas until emergency services declare them safe.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fires while damage assessments begin across affected communities.
