Benidorm / 10 July 2026
Benidorm Cable Ski, one of Europe's oldest and most recognisable cable water-skiing facilities, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a year-long programme of tributes, reunions and sporting events honouring the pioneers who helped make it a landmark attraction on Spain's Costa Blanca.
Founded in 1966 in the waters off Rincón de Loix, the unique over-water cable ski system has introduced millions of visitors to water skiing without the need for boats, helping establish Benidorm as one of Europe's leading destinations for watersports tourism.
The celebrations recognise six decades of sporting excellence, tourism innovation and community spirit, while paying tribute to the people whose vision transformed a stretch of Mediterranean coastline into one of the world's most famous cable ski venues.
Honouring the Founders
A central part of the anniversary celebrations will be a tribute to Humberto Armas Cruz, widely regarded as the driving force behind the creation and long-term success of Benidorm Cable Ski.
To recognise his contribution, the venue's main platform will officially be renamed the "Humberto Armas Cruz Platform."
His wife, Edith Langheinrich, who played an equally important role in developing the business and supporting generations of skiers, will also be honoured for her dedication and commitment throughout the facility's history.
An official unveiling ceremony for commemorative plaques will take place on 10 July at 8pm on the terrace of the Hotel Port Benidorm, attended by local dignitaries, former Beaches Councillor Josefa Pérez, sporting representatives and members of the Cable Ski community.
A Benidorm Landmark Since 1966
The Benidorm Cable Ski has become one of the city's hidden sporting gems, attracting everyone from complete beginners to elite water-ski athletes.
Unlike conventional water skiing, riders are pulled around a circular cable system suspended above the sea, offering a unique experience with spectacular views across Levante Beach and the Benidorm skyline.
Over the past six decades the venue has welcomed countless holidaymakers, hosted competitions, trained professional athletes and become a favourite attraction for visitors looking for an alternative to traditional beach activities.
Its continued success reflects Benidorm's ability to diversify its tourism offer beyond sun and sand, strengthening its reputation as a destination for sports tourism throughout the year.
Anniversary Events Continue Throughout 2026
Celebrations will continue during the summer with a special reunion event on 12 August, coinciding with the highly anticipated solar eclipse visible across much of Spain.
Former skiers, staff, families and supporters will gather at the newly renamed platform for a day of music, food and shared memories celebrating six decades of friendships created through the sport.
The anniversary programme will conclude with an open commemorative competition from 18–20 September, welcoming competitors of all ages and abilities.
Organisers hope the event will recreate the atmosphere of the classic tournaments that helped establish Benidorm Cable Ski's international reputation during its early years.
Boosting Benidorm's Sports Tourism
The anniversary comes as Benidorm continues investing heavily in sports tourism, sustainability and year-round visitor experiences.
Alongside its internationally recognised beaches, cycling routes, watersports and major sporting events, attractions such as Cable Ski continue to help diversify the resort's tourism economy and attract visitors outside the traditional peak holiday season.
Local tourism officials believe preserving iconic attractions like Cable Ski is essential to maintaining Benidorm's unique identity while continuing to modernise the resort.
As celebrations continue throughout 2026, organisers say the anniversary is not simply about looking back at six decades of history, but inspiring future generations to discover one of the Costa Blanca's most distinctive sporting experiences.
The Costa Blanca is in full summer swing, with another busy week of sunshine, festivals, sporting events and family entertainment across Benidorm, Altea, Villajoyosa, Finestrat, La Nucía and L'Alfàs del Pi.
With schools now breaking up across Europe and visitor numbers increasing, beaches, attractions, markets and nightlife are all operating at peak season.
