Benidorm Closes Serra Gelada and El Moralet Parks as Extreme Heat and Wildfire Risk Trigger Red Alert

Benidorm City Council has announced the temporary closure of Serra Gelada Natural Park and El Moralet Park today, Thursday, 23 July, following the declaration of a Red Alert for extreme temperatures and an "Extreme" wildfire risk across the Valencian Community.

The precautionary measures have been introduced after the Generalitat Valenciana and 112 Comunitat Valenciana Emergency Services raised the highest level of pre-emergency due to soaring temperatures and exceptional fire danger. The restrictions will remain in place for as long as the emergency alert is active.

Parks Closed to the Public

Access to Serra Gelada Natural Park and El Moralet Park will be completely prohibited throughout the day. Under regional emergency regulations, all public access on foot, by bicycle and by vehicle is suspended.

Only emergency services, authorised maintenance personnel, surveillance teams and local residents with essential access will be permitted to enter designated areas.

Officials say the closures are essential to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect both residents and visitors during the current heatwave.

Outdoor Sports Facilities to Close

Benidorm City Council has also confirmed that all outdoor municipal sports facilities will close between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., including:

Outdoor courts at Guillermo Amor Sports City
Outdoor facilities at Palau d'Esports

The municipal swimming pools will remain open during their normal operating hours, providing residents and visitors with a safe way to cool down.

The Council has advised that operating hours could change should weather conditions deteriorate further.

Summer Activities Adjusted

Municipal summer schools, educational programmes and organised leisure activities have been instructed to adapt their schedules and reduce outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

Priority will be given to indoor or shaded activities wherever possible to safeguard children, staff and participants.

Mayor Calls for Public Cooperation

Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez said the combination of an extreme wildfire warning and dangerously high temperatures required decisive action.

He explained that the Generalitat Valenciana had once again activated its highest wildfire risk alert across the region, automatically triggering restrictions affecting protected natural areas and forest access.

The Mayor urged residents and tourists alike to cooperate fully with the emergency measures, stressing that the restrictions are designed to protect both public safety and the natural environment.

Health Advice During the Heatwave

Benidorm City Council is reminding everyone to take extra precautions during the current heatwave.

Residents and visitors are advised to:

Avoid direct sun exposure, particularly between 12 noon and 4 p.m.
Stay in cool, shaded or air-conditioned places whenever possible.
Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing and a hat.
Use high-factor sunscreen.
Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise during the hottest hours.
Eat light meals.
Check regularly on elderly relatives, young children and vulnerable people.
Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time.

The City Council is encouraging residents and visitors to monitor official updates via the GVA 112 Alerts App, Benidorm City Council communication channels and the 112 Emergency Service.

Anyone witnessing a fire or serious emergency should immediately call 112.
