Benidorm Launches Urban Biodiversity Programme to Promote Environmental Awareness in City Parks

Benidorm City Council has announced a new programme of environmental activities aimed at raising awareness of biodiversity and promoting the importance of urban green spaces in supporting local ecosystems.

 

The initiative begins this Saturday, 18 April, with a guided environmental route titled “Benidorm en ruta”, designed to highlight the ecological value of the city’s parks and natural areas.

 

Exploring Urban Nature Across the City

The activity will begin at Parque de l'Aigüera and will follow a route through several key green spaces, including:

• Foietes Park
• El Moralet Park
• Séquia Mare Park

 

Participants will explore local biodiversity, including birds, pollinating insects and native plant species, while learning about the environmental role of urban parks.

 

Focus on Biodiversity and Climate Benefits

José Ramón González de Zárate, Councillor for Parks and Gardens, said the programme aims to strengthen public understanding of the natural environment within the city.

 

“We want to raise awareness of the flora and fauna in municipal green spaces and promote respect for urban biodiversity,” he said.

 

He added that urban parks play a key role in:

• Supporting biodiversity and wildlife habitats
• Improving air quality and urban climate conditions
• Providing environmental and recreational value for residents

 

Community Participation and Education

The three-hour activity is open to participants of all ages who are able to cycle or use adapted mobility equipment. Residents are encouraged to bring bicycles and water.

 

Organisers say the programme is designed to combine education, recreation and environmental awareness, helping residents connect more closely with their local natural environment.

 

Future Environmental Workshops Planned

The initiative is part of a wider series of environmental education activities planned for the month.

Upcoming sessions will include workshops on:

• Building bird nest boxes 
• Creating insect hotels 

 

These projects aim to encourage beneficial insect populations and support ecological balance across urban parks.
