Benidorm / 24 April 2026
Authorities in Benidorm have led a public tribute after two construction workers were killed in a workplace accident earlier this week.
A three-minute silence was observed at midday on Thursday in the Plaza de SS MM Reyes de España, following the fatal incident which occurred on Wednesday morning.
The tribute was attended by Mayor Toni Pérez, members of the local council and residents, who gathered to honour the victims and show solidarity with their families.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place at around 10:30am on Wednesday at a construction site on Ibiza Street, where scaffolding reportedly collapsed from mid-height on an 18-storey building.
Emergency services launched a major response operation, securing the area amid falling debris, assisting those affected and ensuring there was no further danger to the public or nearby structures.
Both workers died as a result of the collapse.
Official Response and Investigation
Benidorm City Council declared an official day of mourning on Wednesday, with flags lowered and Thursday’s silence held as a mark of respect.
Councillor for Citizen Security Jesús Carrobles expressed the city’s “deep sorrow and shock” at the tragedy, extending condolences to the victims’ families.
He confirmed that the incident is now under investigation by judicial police, with local authorities cooperating fully to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Community Mourning
The gathering reflected the strong sense of community in Benidorm, with residents joining officials in a quiet show of respect.
Local authorities have reiterated their commitment to supporting the families affected and ensuring all necessary measures are taken following the incident.
Further details have since emerged about the victims of the incident in Benidorm, confirming that the two men who lost their lives were aged 26 and 45 and were working on renovation works at the time of the collapse.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly given the central location of the site on Ibiza Street and the scale of the emergency response that followed.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the structure gave way, with debris falling onto the street below, prompting authorities to quickly seal off the area.
The incident has renewed concerns around safety standards on construction sites in busy urban and tourist areas, with officials under pressure to determine whether all regulations and inspections had been properly followed prior to the collapse.
