Benidorm Nears Completion of Sustainable 360-Space Park-and-Ride Scheme

A major new park-and-ride facility aimed at reducing congestion and improving environmental sustainability in Benidorm is entering its final phase of construction, with completion expected by the end of June.

 

The project, located on Avenida Beniardá on the Moralet municipal plot, will deliver 360 parking spaces as part of a €1.5 million investment fully funded through the European Union’s Next Generation EU programme.

 

City officials, including Mayor Toni Pérez and Councillor for Mobility Francis Muñoz, confirmed during a recent site visit that works are progressing on schedule.

 

Sustainable Design at the Core

The scheme transforms more than 17,000 square metres of land into a modern, environmentally integrated parking facility. A key innovation is the installation of permeable “Pavicésped” paving as part of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS).

 

This technology allows rainwater to filter naturally into the ground, reducing flood risk, easing pressure on drainage systems and supporting groundwater recharge. It also helps lower surface temperatures, tackling the urban heat island effect, while improving the visual integration of the site within the surrounding landscape.

 

Final Works Underway

Construction has now moved into its final stage with permeable paving installed across parking platforms and pedestrian routes nearing completion. Preparations are underway for asphalt surfacing, alongside drainage, lighting and infrastructure works.

 

In the coming weeks, contractors will complete road markings, install street furniture and carry out landscaping, including tree and vegetation planting. The site has also been prepared for future electric vehicle charging points.

 

Supporting Sustainable Mobility

The Beniardá facility forms part of the city’s wider “Vision 360” tourism sustainability strategy, which promotes reduced reliance on private vehicles in central areas.

 

By encouraging drivers to park on the outskirts and use alternative transport, the project aims to cut traffic levels, improve air quality and enhance mobility in one of Spain’s busiest турист destinations.

 

Officials say the initiative builds on policies introduced since 2015 to prioritise public transport, cycling and pedestrian access.

 

Accessible and Future-Ready

The car park will include dedicated spaces for people with reduced mobility and family parking, as well as green areas, pedestrian walkways and smart systems for vehicle access and monitoring.

 

During construction, a nearby temporary parking area with capacity for more than 500 vehicles has remained in operation and will continue to serve users once the new facility opens.

 

Local authorities believe the project will significantly improve parking provision in a high-demand area while setting a benchmark for sustainable urban infrastructure.
