Benidorm at Centre of €8 Million Waste Investment as Consorci Mare Handles Over 54,000 Tonnes in 2026

More than 54,000 tonnes of waste have already been processed across the Costa Blanca in 2026, as the regional waste authority Consorci Mare confirms a major boost in funding exceeding €8 million from the Generalitat Valenciana.

 

The figures place Benidorm at the heart of ongoing environmental investment across the Marina Baixa and Marina Alta regions, with key projects aimed at improving recycling infrastructure and sustainability.

 

Major Investment in Waste Infrastructure

Funding streams include:

• €5.6 million from EU Next Generation funds for a new bulky waste treatment plant
• More than €2.1 million to upgrade recycling centres (ecoparks)
• Additional regional grants to improve facilities, including the Benidorm ecopark

 

Officials say these investments are designed to modernise waste management services across 52 municipalities, including El Campello and surrounding areas.

 

José Ramón González de Zárate, president of Consorci Mare, said the funding will allow the organisation to “continue improving services and offer better facilities for residents.”

 

Waste Levels Surge in Early 2026

In just the first quarter of 2026, Consorci Mare handled:

• 54,664 tonnes of waste (including general, organic, bulky and green waste)
• Over 16,000 tonnes collected via recycling centres

 

The region’s network includes:

• Two permanent sites in Benidorm and Pedreguer
• Seven mobile recycling units

 

Permanent centres accounted for more than 56% of all recycled waste, highlighting growing public use of local facilities.

 

Benidorm’s Growing Environmental Role

With tourism continuing to surge, Benidorm is playing an increasingly important role in managing seasonal waste volumes across the Costa Blanca.

 

Local authorities say improved infrastructure is essential to:

• Cope with rising visitor numbers
• Reduce landfill use
• Increase recycling rates

 

Residents Offered Financial Incentives

To encourage recycling, residents can receive discounts of up to €100 on waste collection fees by using official recycling centres.

 

Users must register via the Consorci Mare app and log their recycling activity to qualify for reductions in the following tax year.

 

Looking Ahead

Consorci Mare is also exploring additional funding opportunities, including further support from EU programmes, to expand and modernise services across the region.

 

Officials say continued investment will be key to meeting environmental targets while maintaining service levels in one of Spain’s busiest tourist areas.
