Calls for Nightclub Safety Inspections in Benidorm Ahead of Summer Season

The local branch of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has called on Benidorm City Council to launch an inspection campaign targeting nightclubs and entertainment venues ahead of the busy summer tourist season.

 

The proposal focuses on ensuring that venues operating across the resort — one of Europe’s most popular nightlife destinations — are fully compliant with licensing regulations and equipped with adequate safety systems.

 

Focus on Licensing and Fire Safety

• PSOE spokesperson Cristina Escoda said the initiative is aimed at verifying:
• The validity of operating and opening licences
• Compliance with local and regional regulations
• The condition and functionality of fire prevention and emergency systems

 

She stressed that the checks would help protect both residents and the large number of tourists expected to visit Benidorm during peak season, while also supporting businesses that already comply with the law.

 

Safety Concerns in High-Volume Venues

Benidorm’s nightlife sector attracts thousands of visitors each year, particularly during the summer months, placing increased importance on crowd safety, emergency preparedness and regulatory oversight.

 

The PSOE said routine inspections would act as a preventative measure, ensuring that venues remain safe environments as visitor numbers rise.

 

Reference to Past Incidents

The call for increased inspections follows wider concerns about nightclub safety in Spain, particularly after the Atalayas district nightclub fires in 2023, which highlighted the consequences of regulatory failures and inadequate safety checks.

 

Escoda said such incidents demonstrate that inspections are not merely administrative procedures but essential safeguards to prevent tragedies.

 

Wider Oversight and Enforcement

The Socialist group has also urged the council to extend inspections beyond nightclubs to all types of leisure venues, particularly following recent reports of establishments operating without proper licences.

 

They argue that stricter oversight would not only improve safety but also help tackle unfair competition from non-compliant businesses.

 

Looking Ahead to the Summer Season

With Benidorm preparing for another busy tourist season, the proposal is being framed as part of a broader effort to ensure the town remains a safe and well-regulated destination for nightlife.

 

City officials have yet to confirm whether a formal inspection campaign will be implemented, but the issue is expected to feature in upcoming local discussions as the summer period approaches.
