Finestrat / 16 April 2026
A major milestone has been reached in Finestrat’s efforts to improve access to its historic centre, with the installation of a 12-tonne elevated walkway connecting a new public lift to the town’s iconic Castell area.
The structure — measuring 27 metres in length and installed at a height of 26 metres — was lifted into place using two large cranes in a carefully coordinated operation involving engineers, construction teams and local authorities.
The project is being delivered as part of a wider accessibility initiative led by Finestrat Town Council, aimed at improving connections between the lower town and one of its most emblematic heritage sites.

Improving Access to a Historic Landmark
Once completed, the lift and walkway will provide a direct route between Plaça de la Unió Europea — home to the Casa de la Cultura — and the upper historic quarter known as El Castell, where the Ermita del Santo Cristo del Remedio is located.
The lift will have capacity for 13 people and is expected to become operational by summer 2026, significantly improving accessibility for both residents and visitors navigating the steep hillside terrain.
Mayor Nati Algado described the installation as a “key moment” for the project, highlighting its role in making one of the town’s most scenic and historic areas more accessible while also boosting its appeal as a tourist destination.
Precision Engineering Operation
The installation of the walkway required a complex, multi-stage lifting process, including:
The operation followed strict health and safety protocols, including prior simulation tests to ensure accuracy and minimise risk.
Local police supported the logistics operation, managing traffic and ensuring the safe arrival of the oversized structure without major disruption.

Investment Backed by European Funding
The project represents an investment of €679,268, with approximately €300,000 funded through the NextGenerationEU programme under Spain’s Tourism Sustainability Plans. The remaining funding is being provided by the local council.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts across Spain to use EU recovery funding to enhance sustainable tourism, accessibility and urban regeneration.
Revitalising the Historic Centre
Beyond improving access, the project is expected to contribute to the revitalisation of Finestrat’s historic upper quarter, encouraging greater footfall and supporting local tourism.
Officials say the new infrastructure will not only improve mobility but also create a new visitor experience, offering elevated views and easier access to cultural landmarks in the town.
