La Nucia / 26 April 2026
A major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening water security in La Nucía is entering its final phase, with a new drinking water reservoir expected to be operational by summer 2026.
The development, located in the Tossal de Rotes area, represents an investment of €1.3 million and will significantly enhance the municipality’s water storage and distribution network.
Doubling Capacity to Meet Demand
The new reservoir will provide a total capacity of 7,000 cubic metres, effectively doubling the town’s water storage capability. The structure has been designed as two independent tanks of 3,500 cubic metres each, allowing for more efficient maintenance and operational flexibility.
Mayor Bernabé Cano visited the site alongside technical teams and representatives from Aqualia, confirming that construction is progressing on schedule.
He described the project as “strategic” for the municipality, highlighting its importance in ensuring a reliable and resilient drinking water supply for both residents and future growth.
Modernisation of Existing Infrastructure
Alongside the construction of the new facility, the project includes significant upgrades to the surrounding water network. This involves the installation of approximately 1.6 kilometres of new pipelines connecting the reservoir to the local water treatment plant, as well as improvements to existing distribution infrastructure.
The works also include refurbishment of the current main reservoir, which has been in operation since 1983, ensuring it remains functional and integrated into the updated system.
Strategic Location and Operation
Situated close to the existing Tossal reservoir and near key municipal infrastructure, the new facility will be supplied primarily via pumping from the local water treatment plant. It will also be connected to the existing system, allowing for flexible water management through a bypass link between reservoirs.
Long-Term Water Security
Local authorities say the project forms part of a broader strategy to modernise essential services and prepare for increasing demand, particularly in areas with growing populations and seasonal tourism pressures.
By expanding capacity and upgrading ageing infrastructure, La Nucía aims to improve efficiency, reduce risk of shortages and ensure consistent water supply standards in the years ahead.
