Benidorm / 19 April 2026
A 53-year-old man has been arrested in Benidorm after allegedly falsely reporting a violent robbery in an attempt to claim insurance compensation for a high-value mobile phone.
Officers from the Spanish National Police launched an investigation after the man reported that he had been robbed “at knifepoint” in the street, claiming his mobile phone—valued at €1,379—had been stolen through violence and intimidation.
Investigation Uncovers False Report
Following the complaint, the individual also filed a claim with his insurance provider, stating that the device had been taken during the alleged assault.
However, detectives from the Judicial Police in Benidorm began inquiries to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident. During the course of the investigation, inconsistencies in the man’s account emerged.
When questioned further, the man admitted that no robbery had taken place.
Instead, he revealed that he had accidentally left the phone at an acquaintance’s home, where it was later returned to him.
Attempted Fraud Charges
Despite recovering the device, the man continued with his insurance claim, prompting officers to pursue additional charges.
He has now been arrested on suspicion of:
