New beach lift opens in Villajoyosa to improve coastal access ahead of Easter

Residents and visitors to Villajoyosa will benefit from improved access to the seafront as a new public lift connecting the town centre with Barberes Sur beach opens on 1 April.

The infrastructure, delivered by Villajoyosa City Council, will come into operation at 10:00am, coinciding with the start of the busy Holy Week tourist period.

The lift provides a direct link between the urban area and the coastline, overcoming a height difference of more than 16 metres and significantly improving accessibility for elderly residents, families and people with reduced mobility.

Mayor Marcos Zaragoza said the project had been delivered on schedule and forms part of a wider strategy to better connect the town with its beachfront.

“This is a key piece of infrastructure that improves accessibility and makes it easier for everyone to reach the promenade and beach safely,” he said.

Major accessibility upgrade

The €784,000 project includes a lift with capacity for 13 people, linked to the upper level by a pedestrian walkway of more than 20 metres. The system incorporates energy-efficient technology, including automatic lighting and ventilation.

In addition to the lift, the scheme has transformed the surrounding beachfront area with new public amenities, including:

• Public toilets
• A children’s playground
• Landscaped green spaces with shaded areas
• Seating and street furniture

Slope stabilisation works have also been carried out to improve safety, using reinforced mesh and anchoring systems to prevent landslides.

Boost for residents and tourism

The new facility is expected to ease movement between the town and one of its most popular coastal areas, particularly during peak holiday periods when visitor numbers increase significantly.

Local officials say the project supports wider efforts to enhance accessibility, modernise public spaces and improve the overall visitor experience along the Costa Blanca.
