Benidorm / 28 May 2026
The PSOE opposition group in Benidorm has called for increased police patrols and stronger enforcement measures following complaints about the growing number of illegal beach vendors operating along the city’s coastline as the busy summer tourist season begins.
The issue centres around unlicensed “mojito vendors” selling alcoholic drinks directly to tourists on the sand, alongside unregulated massage services and counterfeit goods sellers frequently seen across Levante and Poniente beaches.
Socialist councillor Laura Rubio warned that the problem is becoming increasingly visible during one of the most important periods of the year for the resort’s tourism industry.
According to the PSOE, beachgoers are being approached by vendors selling cocktails for around €7, while illegal massage services are reportedly charging up to €10 per session. The opposition party argues that the situation damages Benidorm’s image as a safe and high-quality tourist destination.
Rubio criticised what she described as a lack of decisive action from the local government, claiming the issue resurfaces every summer despite repeated complaints from businesses and residents.
Health and Safety Concerns
The PSOE also raised concerns over hygiene and public health standards linked to the sale of drinks prepared and transported without any sanitary controls or refrigeration measures.
The party warned that many of the beverages are allegedly mixed and stored in unsuitable conditions before being sold directly on the beaches to tourists.
Local hospitality businesses have also expressed frustration, arguing that illegal traders operate without licences, taxes or health inspections while competing with regulated beach bars and restaurants that comply with strict regulations.
Calls for Increased Police Presence
The Socialist group is demanding a stronger police presence across Benidorm’s beaches during the peak tourism months, particularly during afternoons and evenings when illegal sales activity is said to increase.
The PSOE is also requesting multilingual awareness campaigns aimed at visitors, warning tourists about the risks of buying unregulated food, drinks and services from illegal operators.
Beach vending remains an ongoing issue across several major Spanish coastal resorts each summer, particularly in high-tourism areas along the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Balearic Islands, where local authorities regularly carry out seasonal enforcement operations.
Benidorm City Council has not yet publicly responded to the latest criticism, although police inspections and anti-street vending operations are commonly intensified during the summer period.
The Costa Blanca is in full summer swing, with another busy week of sunshine, festivals, sporting events and family entertainment across Benidorm, Altea, Villajoyosa, Finestrat, La Nucía and L'Alfàs del Pi.
With schools now breaking up across Europe and visitor numbers increasing, beaches, attractions, markets and nightlife are all operating at peak season.
