San Miguel de Abona, Tenerife / 8 June 2026
Emergency Landing Near Popular Tourist Area
A small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on a public road in southern Tenerife after reportedly experiencing a fuel-related problem, prompting a major response from emergency services.
The incident occurred in the Amarilla Golf area of San Miguel de Abona, one of the island's most popular residential and tourist destinations, located just a few kilometres from Tenerife South Airport.
Despite the dramatic nature of the landing, both occupants escaped without serious injuries in what authorities have described as a fortunate outcome.
What Happened?
The light aircraft came down on Calle María de los Ángeles Ascanio Cullen on Thursday afternoon before striking a roundabout during the emergency landing manoeuvre.
According to emergency services, two people were on board the aircraft:
Both were able to leave the aircraft without assistance before emergency crews arrived at the scene.
The pair were later transported to hospital for precautionary medical examinations and observation.
Major Emergency Response
Firefighters secured the area and deployed specialist foam across the roadway after fuel leaked from the aircraft, reducing the risk of fire or explosion.
Authorities also established a safety perimeter while the damaged aircraft was assessed and removed.
Reported Fuel Problem
While the official investigation remains ongoing, local reports indicate the emergency was caused by a loss of fuel.
According to statements reported by Spanish media, San Miguel de Abona Mayor Arturo González said the aircraft experienced a fuel-related issue before carrying out the forced landing.
Initial reports suggest the pilot successfully maintained control of the aircraft and performed an emergency landing rather than suffering a sudden crash.
Aviation authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the exact cause.
Why The Incident Drew Attention
Images and video footage of the aircraft resting on a public road quickly spread across social media and international news platforms.
The location attracted particular attention because Amarilla Golf is:
The aircraft came down in an area that regularly experiences both local and visitor traffic, making the absence of serious injuries especially noteworthy.
A Narrow Escape
Emergency services confirmed that no pedestrians, motorists or nearby residents were injured during the incident.
Aviation experts note that forced landings on roads are rare and require significant skill from pilots to avoid obstacles such as street furniture, vehicles and buildings.
The outcome could have been considerably worse given the aircraft's proximity to homes, holiday accommodation and busy local roads.
Investigation Continues
The damaged aircraft remains the focus of an investigation by the relevant aviation authorities, who will examine mechanical, operational and fuel-related factors.
For residents and visitors in southern Tenerife, the incident served as a reminder of how quickly an aviation emergency can unfold.
However, thanks to the pilot's actions and the rapid response of emergency services, what could have become a major tragedy instead ended with only minor injuries and precautionary hospital checks for those on board.
