Spain Battles Major Wildfires as Madrid and Ávila Fires Remain Critical

Spain remains in the grip of one of its most serious wildfire emergencies in recent years, with thousands of firefighters continuing to battle major blazes across the Community of Madrid and neighbouring Ávila as weather conditions provide a narrow opportunity to bring the largest fire under control.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is due to visit the worst-affected areas today, Saturday 25 July, including the emergency command centre in Cenicientos, where he will receive an operational briefing before addressing the nation.

The Spanish Government has also activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, with specialist firefighting aircraft from Italy and Greece arriving to reinforce exhausted Spanish emergency crews.

More Than 60,000 People Affected

Authorities say more than 60,000 people have now been evacuated or confined as multiple fires continue to threaten homes, forests and infrastructure.

The largest blaze west of Madrid has merged into a single fire front after separate fires around San Martín de Valdeiglesias and Villa del Prado combined, creating an enormous challenge for emergency services.

Overnight Weather Brings Hope

Emergency officials say cooler overnight temperatures, lighter winds and increased humidity have provided firefighters with their best opportunity yet to contain the Madrid wildfire.

Madrid's 112 Emergency Service confirmed crews worked throughout the night to strengthen containment lines before daytime temperatures rise again.

However, officials warned that changing winds later today could rapidly alter the fire's behaviour.

National Emergency Response

Spain declared a National Emergency earlier this week, placing the response under central government coordination and deploying the Military Emergency Unit (UME) alongside regional firefighters, Civil Protection teams and hundreds of emergency personnel.

The Government has described the fires as an exceptional emergency due to the number of simultaneous outbreaks, extreme weather conditions and the threat posed to populated areas.

Communications Restored

Telecommunications disrupted by the fires are gradually being restored after damage to infrastructure affected dozens of communities across western Madrid.

Emergency mobile communication units and satellite systems have helped reconnect affected towns while repairs continue.

Extreme Fire Conditions Continue

Much of Spain remains under severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures approaching 40°C in many areas.

Emergency services are urging residents and tourists to:

Follow evacuation or confinement orders immediately.
Avoid travelling into affected areas.
Keep emergency supplies ready.
Stay indoors where smoke is present.
Monitor official updates from emergency authorities.
Officials continue to warn that the wildfire situation remains highly volatile and could change rapidly depending on weather conditions.

Costa Blanca Support

Meanwhile, communities across the Costa Blanca are rallying to support those affected by the devastating wildfires. Local councils, charities and volunteer groups have expressed their solidarity with residents forced to flee their homes in Madrid and Ávila, while many hotels and tourism businesses have offered assistance to displaced families and emergency personnel where needed.

Although the Costa Blanca is not directly affected by these major fires, local authorities remain on high alert as the current heatwave continues, with strict fire prevention measures in place across Alicante Province. Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid lighting fires, dispose of cigarettes responsibly and report any signs of smoke immediately by calling 112.
