Spain Declares 211 Disaster Zones Following Devastating Wildfires and Extreme Weather

The Spanish Government has officially declared 211 areas across 14 autonomous communities as zones seriously affected by civil protection emergencies, paving the way for financial aid, tax relief and reconstruction support for thousands of residents, businesses and local authorities.

The Cabinet decision follows months of devastating wildfires, storms, floods, landslides and other natural disasters recorded between 31 March and 27 July 2026, with the recent fires in Madrid, Ávila, Toledo and Castellón among the most serious incidents included.

The move allows those affected to apply for government assistance while accelerating the repair of damaged homes, public infrastructure and essential services.

Major Wildfires Prompt National Response

The declaration includes the catastrophic wildfires that swept across western Madrid, Ávila and Toledo, forcing the evacuation or confinement of more than 60,000 people and prompting Spain to declare a National Emergency for the first time in response to forest fires.

It also covers the wildfire in La Vall d'Uixó (Castellón), where thousands of residents were evacuated or ordered to remain indoors due to dense smoke, as well as the major blaze in Los Gallardos (Almería).

What Support Is Available?

The declaration creates the legal framework for emergency assistance and recovery funding.

Support may include:

Financial assistance for damaged primary homes and essential belongings.
Aid for businesses affected by the disasters.
Grants for local councils to repair roads, public buildings and infrastructure.
Tax relief, including possible reductions in property and business taxes.
Social Security and employment support for affected workers and self-employed people.
Emergency unemployment payments for employees unable to work because of evacuations or wildfire damage.

Residents are advised to keep photographs, insurance documents, repair estimates and receipts, as these may be required when submitting claims.

Climate Change in Focus

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez renewed calls for a national agreement on climate resilience, warning that Spain is facing increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events.

He said prevention, emergency planning and long-term recovery would require close cooperation between national and regional governments, scientists and emergency services.

Although firefighting teams have made progress in containing several of the largest wildfires, authorities warn that high temperatures and dry conditions continue to pose a significant risk across much of the country.

Costa Blanca Remains on High Alert

While the Costa Blanca has escaped the large-scale destruction seen in central Spain, authorities across Alicante Province remain on heightened wildfire alert following weeks of intense heat.

Several municipalities, including Benidorm, have recently introduced precautionary measures such as temporary closures of natural parks during periods of extreme fire risk, while emergency services continue to urge residents and visitors to avoid lighting fires, dispose of cigarettes responsibly and report any signs of smoke immediately by calling 112.

Officials say vigilance remains essential as the summer holiday season reaches its busiest period.
