Villajoyosa / 9 April 2026
Significant progress has been made this week on the expansion of the bridge over the Río Amadorio on Calle Cervantes, as workers begin pouring the new concrete slab that will widen the historic structure and improve safety and accessibility for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The project, which is part of the town’s multi‑year infrastructure investment plan, involves laying 150 cubic metres of concrete — delivered by around twenty lorries — to form the widened bridge deck. This key phase will allow the bridge to be expanded to 11 metres in width, accommodating a 6.20‑metre roadway and 2.4‑metre footways on either side, significantly improving urban mobility in this part of the municipality.
Modernising a Historic Crossing
The Río Amadorio bridge — a historic structure dating back to the 19th century — has long served as a vital link between different parts of Villajoyosa. Built between 1840 and 1878 with characteristic brick arches and semicircular spans, the bridge carried a narrow footway added around the mid‑20th century that has since proved insufficient for modern traffic and pedestrian needs.
Initial restoration works began in November 2024, focusing on repairing damage from structural dampness and water infiltration. However, earlier extensions were found to be inadequate, prompting the local government to pause and redesign the project in 2025 to ensure greater durability and accessibility.
Comprehensive Upgrades for Safety and Accessibility
Beyond widening the bridge deck, the work includes a series of upgrades designed to modernise the structure and enhance public safety:
These improvements aim to support both everyday mobility and future needs as Villajoyosa continues to grow and develop.
Investment and Local Impact
The contract for the works has a total budget of €858,387 and has been awarded to the construction firm Pavasal. The bridge project forms part of Villajoyosa’s broader multi‑year investment programme, under which more than €23 million is earmarked for public works and infrastructure enhancements across the town.
Officials say that once completed, the widened bridge will not only ensure greater structural safety but also provide a more accessible and user‑friendly route connecting key neighbourhoods and improving daily travel for residents and visitors alike.
