Villajoyosa | 13 January 2026
Villajoyosa City Council has announced the installation of smart pedestrian crossings and educational speed cameras as part of a wider strategy to improve road safety and urban mobility. Both projects have already been awarded and represent a total investment of more than €110,000.
The initiative includes the installation of at least 15 smart pedestrian crossings across the municipality, along with around 12 educational speed cameras located in different streets and neighbourhoods.
According to Jaime Santamaría, Councillor for Urban Mobility, the new crossings will significantly enhance safety for both pedestrians and drivers. “Smart pedestrian crossings improve visibility and increase driver attention, particularly at night or in low-light conditions,” he said. The locations have been selected based on technical reports prepared by the Local Police, prioritising critical areas.
The smart crossings will feature horizontal and vertical LED lighting to clearly mark both sides of the crossing, combined with a pedestrian detection system that activates the lighting when pedestrians are present.
The project to install the smart crossings has been awarded to Señalización Roses for €71,133.15, while the installation of the educational speed cameras has been awarded to Proyectos Integrales de Balizamiento SL for €40,034.41.
The educational speed cameras will measure vehicle flow and record driving speeds, displaying colour-coded messages that change when drivers exceed the speed limit. Their primary function is educational rather than punitive, aiming to encourage safer driving behaviour and smoother traffic flow.
Santamaría explained that the objective is “to better manage urban mobility and reduce speeding, which poses a clear risk to road safety.”
Meanwhile, Pedro Ramis, Councillor for Smart City, highlighted the technological value of the system: “The data collected by these devices will not only help manage traffic more efficiently, but will also be integrated into Villajoyosa’s future Municipal City Platform.”
Both councillors underlined that the initiative forms part of a broader municipal strategy to improve public spaces and promote safe mobility, based on prevention, data and objective information.
