Alicante Brit couple jailed for smuggling €1m worth of cocaine

A British couple who live in Alicante who where arrested with nine kilos of cocaine worth €1 million on board a luxury cruise, have been jailed for a total of more than eight years after being found guilty of smuggling. They had claimed a mystery ‘Jamaican businessman’ funded their lavish lifestyle but the court threw this out.

Three judges convicted retired chef Roger Clarke, 72, and his ex-secretary wife Sue, 71, of drugs trafficking after a one-day trial at Lisbon’s main criminal court.

The pair were arrested on board cruise liner Marco Polo on December 4, 2018 after Portuguese police acted on a tip-off from Britain's National Crime Agency.

They discovered nine kilos of cocaine hidden inside the lining of four suitcases Roger had been handed on the sunshine island of St Lucia.
