This is our nightly round up of the latest coronavirus crises news and information from Spain, the UK and from around the world:

  • As of 6.50pm, today the 19th March, here in Spain there are 17,395 cases of Covid-19, 803 people have died and 1,107 have recovered. In the UK there are 2,692 cases, 137 deaths and 65 people have recovered.
  • In our province of Alicante no new cases were registered  between Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 March. The region’s Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, made the announcement during her press conference, yesterday. Throughout the Valencian Community, 26 new cases have been registered, 17 the province of Valencia itself, seven in Castellón and two in other others the total is now 541 for Valenciana, with 304 in Valencia, 186 in the province of Alicante and 39 in Castellón. The number of deaths remains at 13.
  • Number of COVID-19 deaths in Italy surpasses China as total reaches 3,405
  • From 24:00 hrs Wed 18 Mar until 24:00 hrs Tue 24 Mar, Ryanair Group Airlines will cut flight schedules by over 80%. All affected customers will receive an email to advise them of their options and we kindly ask customers not to call us as our call centres are overloaded dealing with customer queries.
  • Michel Barnier the EU’s top Brexit negotiator has conformed on social media that he has tested positive for Covid-19, he is confident in his recovery. A second round of Brexit talks were due to take place this week, but they have now been cancelled.
  • Tourist campsites to close along with hotels over the next few days. The British Embassy is advising that all British Tourist should make immediate arrangements to get home to the UK. With all hotels closed across Spain by the 24th March
  • The Chinese Community in Altea have donated 1,800 masks and 60 boxes of disposable gloves to the Guardia Civil. Great to see the gestures of support and kindness that are happening all over our area.
  • A collective help network to guarantee basic care to the people who need it most during the coronavirus crisis has been launched in Benidorm.
  • The Spanish Government has ordered the closure of all the ITV centres; therefore, no driver will be fined if the ITV test has expired.
  • In the UK legislation is being put in place to help tackle Covid-19. Schools closing, possibility of remote learning. The Queen has issued a message of solidarity following the coronavirus outbreak, saying families around the UK were entering "a period of great concern and uncertainty".
  • France and Italy could extend lockdowns further.
  • European Central Bank launches emergency $820bn package
  • Australia and New Zealand close their borders to non-residents
  • Confirmed cases worldwide pass 220,000, deaths near 9,000
  • The Bank of England has cut its base rate to a joint-record low of 0.1% - warning the coronavirus pandemic will result in a "sharp and large" economic shock.
