This year, the municipality hosts the presentation ceremony for the QUALITUR flags of the Valencian Community, which have been awarded to 40 municipalities.
La Cala de Finestrat has been awarded the Qualitur Flag, granted by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Regional Government) in recognition of the excellence and quality of this beach. The awards ceremony for the entire Valencian Community took place in La Cala de Finestrat, where the Mayor, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, received the Qualitur Flag from the Regional Minister for Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Marian Cano. At the same ceremony, these awards were presented to the beaches and coves of 40 municipalities throughout the Valencian Community recognised in 2025. The awards were also presented to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, José Manuel Camarero; the Director General of Tourism, Israel Martínez; and, representing Finestrat, Estela Álvarez, the Councilor for Beaches, Donna R. Plummer, the Councilor for Tourism of Finestrat, Nati Algado, and the Councilor for Tourism of Finestrat, María Teresa Pérez.
First, the mayor of Finestrat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca , expressed his gratitude for the choice of Finestrat to host this regional event and for the presence of the Regional Minister, Marian Cano. "We are a municipality with just 300 meters of beach where we are able to offer services marked by quality, sustainability, and excellence." Pérez Llorca recalled the distinctions Finestrat has achieved in this area, such as the S for Sustainability, the Q for Tourism Quality, the Smoke-Free Beach Flag, the ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications, and now the Qualitur. “A flag is always a symbol of pride.
Today we feel especially proud because our beach, La Cala de Finestrat, has been recognised with the Qualitur Flag.” “It is also a source of pride to host this regional event, where this award is presented to the 40 municipalities that have worked hard to be here today. Therefore, my congratulations and pride in championing this recognition of quality, the excellence of our services, and our commitment to environmental care for our beach.”
The Qualitur Flag recognises the efforts of municipalities that offer beaches with clean waters and well-maintained sands, surveillance measures that guarantee the safety of bathers, restrooms, recreation and leisure areas that increase users' comfort, recreational facilities, and educational services that transform a day at the beach into a tourist experience, environmental protection measures that contribute to preserving one of our most important resources, and guarantee its universal accessibility.
During her speech, Minister Marian Cano highlighted that " 40 of the 60 coastal municipalities in the Valencian Community will fly this flag during the summer," while acknowledging that "it is the result of constant work and collaboration between public administrations and the private sector to raise the quality of our tourist offering." Furthermore, Cano emphasised that "we are at the beginning of the summer season, a key moment in which the Valencian Community is consolidating its position as a leading destination for our visitors" and noted that these flags reflect a "collective effort to guarantee clean, safe, accessible, and sustainable beaches ." She also emphasized that "certified quality and sustainability are a competitive advantage over other destinations. We want anyone who chooses the Valencian Community to do so with the peace of mind of knowing that our beaches meet the highest quality standards."
Among the services offered by La Cala de Finestrat are the "Accessible Beach" area, which makes swimming easier for people with reduced mobility; playgrounds with awnings; a bio-health area for outdoor exercise; beach volleyball nets; a public restroom; and the option to rent hammocks, umbrellas, and awnings.
In terms of connectivity, La Cala de Finestrat has free access to the WiFi network on the beach and promenade, as well as USB ports on various benches along the promenade to facilitate charging mobile devices.
The lifeguard service is active every day from June 1st to October 15th, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Furthermore, La Cala de Finestrat has been a smoke-free beach since 2020. In 2021, the City Council became one of the first in Spain to modify its ordinance on social distancing in public spaces to penalize smoking or vaping on the sand.
History: Finestrat's tourism awards
In 2016, Finestrat launched its strategy as a Smart Tourist Destination (DTI) in the Valencian
Community. Since 2019, it has been part of the national DTI network, along with major cities such as Seville, Bilbao, and Malaga.
SICTED Commitment: For 11 years, the City Council has been part of the Comprehensive System for
Tourist Quality in Destination (SICTED). Specifically, the Tourist Offices, the Museum, and the Local
Police follow this system, as well as tourism businesses throughout the municipality.
At the recent edition of FITUR, the municipality achieved the S for Sustainable Tourism, awarded to the La Cala Tourist Office, and the Q for Tourist Quality to the Finestrat Museum. This last award was also obtained by the La Cala Tourist Information Center at FITUR 2024.
It's worth remembering that Finestrat is a Tourist Municipality of Excellence, a distinction awarded by the Generalitat Valenciana (Generalitat Valenciana) through Turisme Comunitat Valenciana (Valencian Community Tourism) to municipalities that make a firm commitment to the quality and improvement of tourism services.
In 2021, Finestrat became one of the 11 municipalities throughout the Valencian Community to receive Next Generation EU funds from the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plans. Specifically, €3 million was allocated to implement projects for a more sustainable, more accessible, and more innovative Finestrat.
141 certificates in quality, environment, and accessibility
The Generalitat (Catalan Government), through Turisme Comunitat Valenciana (Valencian Community Tourism), grants this Qualitur Flag recognition to all beaches and coves in the Valencian
Community that hold a recognized certificate.
Specifically, the recognized standards of excellence are: ISO 9001 and Q for Tourism Quality in quality; ISO 14001, EMA Regulation, and S for Sustainability in environmental matters; and UNE 170001 in accessibility.
Thus, the Valencian Community has 141 certificates distributed across 206 beaches and coves that will display the Qualitur Flag this summer 2025 in recognition of their commitment to excellence.
Of the 141 certificates, 56% are in quality, followed by environmental matters, which represent 37.6% of the total certificates, and finally accessibility, at 6.4%.
