In response to requests from citizens during the recent meeting with Mayor Juanfran Pérez Llorca, the council has installed educational radars in La Cala, specifically on Avenida Marina Baixa and the promenade, as well as on the commercial boulevard, on Carrer Alacant. "These are busy pedestrian thoroughfares heading towards the beach, and in the area of the TRAM station, towards the retail park. There, we have completed the installation of these radars, known as educational radars, because they provide highly visual information, using green and red colors and smiley faces, if a vehicle exceeds the maximum permitted speed," reported Guillermo Lloret, Councilor for Works and Projects.
These radars display the speed at which a vehicle is traveling as it passes in front of them. If the speed limit is exceeded, 30 km/h or 20 km/h, the color changes from green to red, and the smiley face changes from happy to sad. “It's an informative measure because all drivers can see the speed they're traveling. And it's a preventative measure, for the safety of our pedestrians. These radars aren't used to fine drivers. That's not their purpose, but to prevent traffic and also to express their gratitude with a smile when drivers don't exceed the permitted speed,” added Traffic and Safety Councilor Beatriz Quintillán.
It's worth remembering that, taking advantage of the redevelopment work on Avenida Benidorm , this type of technology was also installed at the entrances to the Puig Campana Primary School, where there is a large influx of families with schoolchildren. Now, as the mayor promised in his recent address in response to this public request, the radars have also been installed in La Cala and the commercial boulevard.
