Benidorm / Alfaz / 29 March 2026
A woman has been rescued by helicopter after suffering serious injuries while hiking on a popular coastal trail in eastern Spain.
Emergency services were called at approximately 10:48am on Saturday after the hiker fell on a steep path leading to the communications antenna in El Albir, within the municipality of L'Alfàs del Pi — a well-known area for walking routes and panoramic views along the Costa Blanca.
According to the Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium, the woman sustained significant head and leg injuries following the fall, prompting a coordinated emergency response.
Firefighters from the Benidorm station were first to arrive on scene, accessing the difficult terrain on foot to assess the situation. Due to the seriousness of the injuries and the location of the incident, the decision was made to deploy the Alfa-1 rescue helicopter, along with a specialist mountain rescue team.
Emergency crews stabilised the casualty at the scene before carrying out an airlift to hospital for further treatment. The operation involved multiple units, including a command vehicle, transport resources and a team of firefighters, highlighting the complexity of rescues in mountainous and hard-to-reach coastal areas.
The incident took place in an area popular with both tourists and residents, particularly during the spring season when hiking conditions are generally favourable. Authorities regularly remind walkers to take appropriate precautions, including suitable footwear, awareness of terrain conditions and carrying communication devices.
The rescue operation was successfully completed by midday, with the casualty transferred safely for medical care.
