These walkways are much wider and have a handrail, ensuring access to the sea for people with mobility problems.
The accessible area of Villajoyosa's central beach, popularly known as La Basseta de l'Oli, now has new, much wider accessible walkways with the aim of improving and expanding the services available at this bathing area.
140 new walkways made of sustainable, non-slip materials, accessible signage, and handrails have been installed to ensure universal enjoyment of the beach, regardless of the user's physical or sensory condition.
These walkways are designed to facilitate access to the beach and sea for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. The material used, in addition to being waterproof and easy to handle, requires minimal maintenance, reinforcing its sustainability. The walkways facilitate passage from the beach access to the seashore itself, with a removable final section made of recycled plastic. In addition, footbaths, showers, and portable toilets have been relocated and adapted, ensuring their integration into the new accessible layout. Accessible information panels in easy-to-read Braille, QR codes, and videos in Spanish Sign Language have been installed.
This action is part of the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD), financed with European funds through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan - NextGenerationEU, and is aligned with objective 4 of the Sustainable Tourism Strategy of the Valencian Community 2020-2025, contributing to improving the quality of tourist services and reinforcing Villajoyosa's commitment to accessibility and sustainability.
The project reinforces Villajoyosa's accessibility model, consolidating the central beach as a benchmark for accessibility and adapted services, as well as positioning the municipality as a destination committed to innovation and continuous improvement of the coastal environment.
The Councilor for Beaches, Carlos Soler, explains that "the installation of these walkways responds to the need to develop infrastructure that guarantees accessibility and contributes to increasing the satisfaction of visitors and residents. These same walkways have also been installed at Paradís Beach. Both Paradís Beach and the central beach are two of the municipality's most iconic spots, which this summer are already being enjoyed more equitably by all, regardless of their physical abilities. Therefore, Villajoyosa is improving the accessibility of its coast and promoting a more responsible and inclusive tourism model."
