La Nucía was awarded the “European Sports Village 2024” award at the European Parliament in Brussels, at the ACES Europe Gala (Association of European Sports Capitals). In this way, La Nucía becomes the first “European Sports Village” in Spain to receive the award twice, for “its determined commitment to sport.”
Bernabé Cano , mayor of La Nucía, received the “European Sports Village 2024” award from Gian Francesco Lupattelli, member of ACES Europe, a flag accrediting the award. Accompanying the first mayor in collecting this award in Brussels were: Sergio Villalba , Councilor for Sports, and Pepe Cano , Councilor for Citizen Participation. In the same Gala, other locations such as Thessaloniki (Greece), Pristina (Kosovo), Viseu (Portugal), Manchester, Sofia and Genoa were awarded.
In the ACES Europe statement to inform about the designation of La Nucía as “European Sports Village for 2024”, the European organization highlights that “La Nucía is a good example of sport for everything, as an instrument of health, integration, education and "I respect which are the main objectives of ACES Europe." ACES Europe highlights that “La Nucía has developed an exemplary sports policy with programs and activities. And that the new investments and sports development in the city have been surprising in this last decade.”
European Sports Village, for the second time
On November 7, 2012, at the European Parliament in Brussels, La Nucía received the “European Sports Village 2013” award. Now eleven years later ACES EUROPE (Association of European Sports Capitals) has once again awarded the candidacy of La Nucía, with the award of “European Sports Village 2024 ”, after the exhaustive visit of the Evaluation Committee to evaluate the Nucía facilities on last April. Let us remember that after 10 years the regulations contemplate that cities can present themselves again, as other towns such as Glasgow have done.
“Award for everyone”
“This European Village 2024 award for La Nucía is an award from all the athletes in the municipality, from all the clubs, from all the sports schools, from all the coaches and instructors... All of them with their great work Through sport they have made it possible for us to receive this award for the second time. Remember that in addition to the sports facilities, the jury has highly valued the management model, the promotion of healthy habits among the population, education through sport and integration through sport, and in all of this our clubs, schools and athletes have been key,” said Bernabé Cano , mayor of La Nucía.
European third prize
This new award of “European Sports Village 2024” for La Nucía is a seal of “sports quality” and a valuable international promotion at an institutional, sports and tourism level for the municipality. This is the third time that La Nucía has been awarded at the European Parliament in Brussels .
Let us remember that La Nucía received the “European Sports Village 2013” award in 2012 and in December 2017 it collected the “Best European Village” award, after competing with 35 other European villages. To these European awards we must add the “National Sports Award” from the Higher Sports Council of the Government of Spain, which La Nucía received in 2013.
“Investing in sport is investing in health”
In his speech, Hugo Alonso, general secretary of ACES Europe, highlighted that La Nucía “was a visionary in linking sport and healthy habits, because investing in sport is investing in health. One euro invested in sport is €15 saved in health. In addition, this town was also a pioneer in seeing sport as an economic engine of society. Today 3% of the Gross Domestic Product of the European Union is generated through sport and 3.5% of employment is also generated through Sport in Europe. Sports tourism is one of the greatest assets today as a business magnet. Circumstance that La Nucía has known how to exploit splendidly and the ACES Europe tribunal has valued it very positively.”
La Nucía has become a benchmark in healthy living habits, especially in childhood, since 83% of the school population practices sports, when the national average is around 65%.
“New award for our “La Nucía, City of Sports” project
“This new award, third at the European level, is a recognition of our determined and clear commitment to the sport that we started 21 years ago in La Nucía. We are committed to sports as a means of tourism promotion, a way to create healthy habits, a means for social integration and as an economic engine of the municipality. A risky bet from which we are now reaping the fruits, consolidating our brand of “La Nucía, City of Sports”. To achieve this award we have passed an audit and evaluation by ACES Europe. This award will give us incalculable promotion and greater prestige as a European sports reference,” says Bernabé Cano , mayor of La Nucía.
