Five police vehicles and the Air Unit's drone have also been made available to Emergencies, pending the request for new resources.
The City Council appreciates the displays of solidarity from citizens and informs that as soon as material resources are needed, they will be transferred to the population.
Benidorm City Council has sent twenty local police officers, a dog specialised in rescuing people and five police vehicles to the province of Valencia to help in the rescue and location of missing persons as a result of the DANA that has hit the region. This has been reported by the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, who has indicated that the officers have been working since last night in the Valencian towns of Paiporta and Alzira, two of the most affected by this episode that has claimed the lives of nearly a hundred people, mostly in the province of Valencia.
18 volunteer officers have been sent to Paiporta while another two officers from the Canine Unit, together with a dog from this patrol, have been transferred to the Alzira Fire Station, from where they will participate in the search and location of missing persons.
In addition to these personnel, the Benidorm City Council has sent five police vehicles to the area to assist in these tasks, while it has made available to the organisations that are coordinating this tragedy the drone of the Local Police Air Unit, which will move to the area as soon as the competent authority requests it.
The mayor stressed that, “as it could not be otherwise, Benidorm has provided our absolute collaboration from the first minute, both to the Emergency Coordinator and to the town councils of the affected towns, through the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, to provide them with the necessary help and human or material resources, as we have already done”. He also explained that “as the day progresses and new needs arise, we will provide the means and resources that are within our reach”.
Likewise, Toni Pérez, on behalf of the City Council, has conveyed that “at this moment we are acting on the emergency” and that “as material resources are needed, all the population that wants to collaborate will be informed”. The mayor has thanked, once again, “all the signs and proposals of solidarity and collaboration that we are receiving from entities and individuals” but has insisted that “at this time we have to wait for those who are working on the ground to tell us what the most pressing needs are so that the help we provide is the most effective and we can alleviate the situation that those affected are going through”.
“Benidorm is a very supportive city, it has always shown this, and as soon as we know in what sense we are required to act and help, we will do so. But always attending to the needs that the administrations and entities that are managing this tragedy tell us”, he concluded.
In addition to the help that is going to be organised by the municipality, the City Council has also suspended various events that were going to take place during these days on the occasion of the declaration of three days of official mourning for the tragedy caused by the DANA. Thus, as already reported yesterday, the City Council and the Neighbourhood Council agreed to postpone the award ceremony for the 2024 Exemplary Neighbour Award that was going to be held this afternoon, as a sign of mourning and solidarity with the victims, families and those affected by the floods, and whose new date will be announced shortly.
Likewise, the City Council has also placed all the flags outside its public buildings at half-mast, while those located inside are wearing a crepe.
Likewise, some regional sports competitions that were going to be held during these days have also been postponed. In addition, the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals has also cancelled several of the activities that were planned to take place on the occasion of the Cultural Week, in agreement with the entities in charge of carrying them out. Among them, the concert by the Societat Musical La Nova scheduled for this Saturday afternoon.
