The Generalitat has begun to prepare a series of activities to mark Europe Day, which commemorates the historic Schuman Declaration, considered the beginning of the current European Union, every 9 May.
To this end, the Directorate General for European Funds and the Public Sector of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Universities and Employment, and Europe Direct Comunitat Valenciana, is holding three competitions for children, adolescents and young people to reflect on the celebration of Europe Day in the most creative way possible.
The deadline for submitting competition entries begins this Saturday, March 1, and all information regarding the rules for each of the three competitions can be found on this website .
The Director General of European Funds and the Public Sector, María del Mar González, stressed that this initiative “aims to promote learning and interest in the European Union and to ensure that young people adopt the objectives of the European Union as their own, such as promoting peace, its values and the well-being of citizens, offering freedom, security and justice without internal borders, as well as achieving sustainable development based on balanced economic growth and a highly competitive market economy with full employment and social progress”.
“We want to raise awareness among young people in our Community of the importance of combating social exclusion and discrimination, promoting equality between women and men and the protection of children's rights, strengthening economic, social and territorial cohesion and solidarity between EU countries, as well as improving the quality of the environment, promoting scientific and technological progress and respecting the richness of its cultural and linguistic diversity,” said Mª del Mar González.
Call for all ages
Students in 5th and 6th grade of Primary Education in the Valencian Community will be able to participate in the school drawing competition 'The Colours of the Union' until 31 March, organised by the Directorate General of European Funds and the Public Sector. The drawings can use any type of technique (watercolours, pencils, crayons, tempera paint, etc.) as long as they fit into the standard A-3 size, on paper or card.
With the aim of promoting awareness and understanding of the fundamental values that underpin the European Union, a collaborative short story competition is being held with the motto 'United for Europe'. All publicly funded educational centres in the Valencian Community may participate in this competition and the competition will have two categories of participants: a first category for groups in Compulsory Secondary Education and a second for groups in Baccalaureate and Vocational Training.
Interested people can submit their work, with a maximum of 300 words, in Valencian or Spanish, until March 31. The work will consist of a collaborative micro-story that must revolve around the concept of European solidarity and will have to be done by groups of at least five students and a maximum of all the students in a group or class.
Finally, a photography competition has been created with the motto 'Reflections of solidarity', with the aim of reinforcing, encouraging and promoting interest and knowledge on the part of Valencian youth. Anyone over 18 years of age who is resident in the Valencian Community may participate.
No more than three individual photographs or those forming a series will be accepted per participant, and the photographs must first be published on each participant's Instagram social media account with a representative phrase or title, in Valencian or Castilian, explaining the image with a maximum of 50 words and the hashtags #UEamb-mí, #UEconmigo and #EuropeDay, and then sent to the email address diaeuropacv@gva.es .
Young people will have to show through a snapshot how they reflect the ideas and values that the EU promotes in the Community. In this case, people who want to participate have until April 29.
The awards for the three competitions will be presented in person on 9 May to close the event that will take place at Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante, where Europe Day will be celebrated, and various activities will be organised to further explore the importance of moving towards a more digital, inclusive and sustainable Europe.
