On the occasion of the European Day of Natural Parks, which is celebrated yesterday, Saturday, the minister visited the Interpretation Center of the Fondo Natural Park
The Minister for the Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, has announced the launch of a new mobile application to access all relevant information about the natural parks of the Valencian Community, with the aim of improving the visitor experience, promoting the protection of the environment and facilitating conscious and sustainable planning.
On the occasion of the European Day of Natural Parks, which is celebrated on May 24, the minister presided over the event held at the Interpretation Center of the Fondo Natural Park, in which he explained that this new tool will offer updated information on routes, regulations, news and activities, as well as safety warnings, weather conditions or temporary access restrictions. “The application represents a qualitative leap in the management and access to our natural parks, guaranteeing the coexistence between society and nature”, he assured. The event was also attended by the mayor of Crevillent, Lorda Aznar; the mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano, and the mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz.
Martínez Mus recalled that this initiative is based on the previous experience of the mobile application 'Discover the Carrascar de la Font Roja Natural Park', launched a few months ago, with the aim of disseminating its flora, fauna and history, and which is now being extended to the rest of the natural parks in the Valencian Community.
"The use of technology allows us to bring our natural spaces closer to all citizens, to facilitate a responsible, safe and adapted experience for each person", the minister pointed out. The app will also allow reservations to be made to visit sensitive spaces with limited capacity, such as the Cova Tallada, the Columbretes or the Las Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, among others.
This year's European Day of Natural Parks is celebrated under the motto 'Society and nature, shared lives'. In this vein, Martínez Mus stressed the importance of citizen involvement in the conservation of protected areas and highlighted the role of landowners included in parks, "whose active collaboration is essential to preserve biodiversity".
Accessibility and continuous improvement
During his speech, the minister also highlighted the Generalitat's commitment to universal accessibility to natural parks. In the case of the Fondo Natural Park, 67,000 euros have been invested since June 2024 in the rehabilitation of the yellow route, the busiest in the park and adapted for people with reduced mobility, as well as in the renovation of the public bathrooms in the interpretation center.
These improvements are part of the project promoted together with COCEMFE, which envisages the expansion of the accessible route and the creation of new adapted bird observation points, with the aim of guaranteeing "that all people can enjoy the natural environment under equal conditions", pointed out Martínez Mus.
Economic development and sustainability
On the other hand the Generalitat also reaffirms its commitment to a model that combines environmental conservation and socioeconomic development, through initiatives such as the Natural Parks Brand, which brings together companies committed to sustainability.
The event included the participation of representatives of these entities in the parks of southern Alicante, as an example of a green economy linked to the territory. It also included the inauguration of a collective photographic exhibition with works by five authors who have collaborated with the Fondo Natural Park.
Finally, Martínez Mus referred to the upcoming appointment of the new president of the Governing Board of the Fondo Natural Park, “a position that has so far been held in a formidable manner by Vicent Sansano, to whom we thank all his work”. In a short time, José Navarro, professor and lecturer in Environmental Sciences at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, will take up the position.
On the occasion of the European Day of Natural Parks, the Ministry of the Environment has organized a series of free activities for all audiences from Saturday, May 24 to June 7. They can be consulted on the Generalitat's natural parks website .
