Residents of l'Alfàs del Pi, from 99 different countries, will meet on Sunday 20 October on the esplanade of the Casa de Cultura, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in one of the most crowded, colourful and lively festivals held in this cosmopolitan town in the Marina Baixa.
“People, the people, are the protagonists of the International Day of l'Alfàs. Our associations and groups, our residents, are the protagonists in a day of coexistence open to the collaboration and participation of all the municipalities of the region.” Martina Mertens, councillor for the International area of l'Alfàs, together with Patrick de Meirsman, councillor responsible for promoting associations, invite everyone to come and enjoy the proposals of 68 associations and groups that will set up a series of stands on the esplanade of the House of Culture where the different participating countries will offer food tastings, handicrafts, live musical performances, and there will be a play area for children.
“A day to promote coexistence and integration of our residents from different nationalities,” says the Councillor for the International Area, Martina Mertens, who once again wanted to highlight “the importance that the involvement of associations and groups has for us. Without their support this commemoration would be impossible.” And it is precisely associations and groups who design the programme of activities in collaboration with the City Council.
The International Day of l'Alfàs is a festive and cultural initiative that is a pioneer in Marina Baixa. It was launched in 2007 by the Alfasino council, in collaboration with associations and groups of foreign residents, to commemorate one of the great strengths of the municipality: multiculturalism, since in l'Alfàs del Pi people of almost a hundred different nationalities live together, with more than 50% of the population being of foreign origin. Venezuela, Colombia, Nepal, Romania, India, Ukraine, Paraguay, France, Dominican Republic, Syria, Algeria, Morocco, Norway, Ivory Coast, United Kingdom, Peru, Bulgaria, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Romania, Bulgaria, Uruguay, Nicaragua, Germany, Cuba, Brazil, Moldova, Colombia, Vietnam, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain... The list of countries represented is long and enriching, as well as a great party in which attendees can learn about the culture, folklore and gastronomy of countries represented in the municipality.
Therefore, the councillor adds, it is a day for greater knowledge and rapprochement, in which the aim is to promote coexistence and integration of people of different nationalities.
