José M. Borja: “The data reflect a positive evolution of employment in Altea, but we continue working to consolidate this trend and advance in equality”
The councilor for Employment Promotion of the Altea City Council, José M. Borja, has positively assessed the latest unemployment data recorded by LABORA, which show a 13.3% reduction in unemployment in the municipality during the first half of the year.
According to the data revealed by Borja, in January 2025, Altea had a total of 1,076 unemployed people, a figure that dropped to 933 in June, which means 143 fewer people in a situation of unemployment. An improvement that has been generalized in all age groups: in under-25s it has gone from 65 to 45 unemployed people, which represents a reduction of 30.8%; in people between 25 and 44 years old, from 307 unemployed people it has gone to 246, which indicates a reduction of 19.9% and in over-44s, from 704 unemployed people it has gone to 642, that is, the reduction has been 8.8%.
“Furthermore, if we broaden the perspective and compare the current data with those of a decade ago, the progress is even more significant”; points out the mayor. In January 2015, Altea registered 2,045 people in a situation of unemployment, practically double that of today. The unemployment rate has gone from 12.99% in 2015, to 5.87% in 2025, and the number of affiliations to Social Security has increased from 6,289 to 9,128 in the same period.
According to the councilor, "this evolution reflects the collective and sustained effort of many administrations and social agents, and from the Department of Employment Promotion we continue to reinforce with measures that support quality employment and local development."
In addition, Jose Maria Borja added that “this decrease in unemployment also responds to the framework of reforms promoted by the Spanish Government in recent years, which have allowed progress towards a more stable and fair labor market”. “Among these measures, the promotion of permanent contracts, the reduction of the working day to 37.5 hours planned for this year, and the improvement of access to unemployment benefits stand out, which have helped to combat structural unemployment. According to official data, in June 2024 record employment figures were achieved, with the lowest level of unemployment in the last 16 years”. The mayor detailed.
Despite these positive data, Borja acknowledged that “significant challenges persist, especially in terms of equality”. In June 2025, unemployment figures in Altea show a clear gender bias, with 512 unemployed women compared to 412 men. “This difference is structural and forces us to continue applying feminist and progressive policies that combat inequalities in access, stability and quality of employment. It is not just about generating jobs, but also about ensuring that no one is left behind, especially women, who continue to suffer from higher unemployment rates”, stressed the councillor.
"The Employment Promotion area continues to work in collaboration with social entities, local companies, training centers and other administrations to promote job placement, especially for the most vulnerable groups. These data encourage us to continue moving forward, with humility and determination. There is still a long way to go, but we are moving towards a fairer Altea, with more employment and more equality", concluded Borja.
